To what shall I compare thee...

This post is inspired by Manxome who posted this analogy which popped into her head while she was reading at the Den:

"Rape is not sex, just as hammering a nail into someone's head is not construction"

I think that's brilliant! As Manxome said, she could go on for hours thinking up other analogies and I thought "what a good game!" So I'm inviting you all to indulge yourselves for five or ten minutes, to let your imaginations fly and your creative muses loose... Give it your best shot.

Mine?

Pornography isn't harmful, just as Big Mac's are a slimming aid.

Have fun!

    What a great idea :)

Prostitution is not a choice; just as slavery is a not a career path.

Hope this makes sense...took me about 10 mins!!

Pornography represents autonomous female sexuality, just as trophy animal heads represent nature.

blimey your other readers are good at this...

erm not specifically feminist but Warr does not create peace just as ignorance does not solve problems?

hmm - rather more profound than I intended...

The implication of current rape laws do not bring about justice just as yellow lights do not cause motorists to slow down. Both are good in theory (perhaps) but poor in execution...

SE - You do not suck at this! You do not suck at anything. You are elephant (spotted no less), hear you roar! Or whatever elephants do :)

oh...I bet you could use that in an anology: ______________ like an elephant trumpets...or something.

Men are visiting strip clubs to honor the beauty of women like oil company heads are visiting Iraq to honor the independence of Iraqi people.

    Oh these are fab!

Women lie about rape like pornography tells the truth about female sexuality

I appreciate the sentiment here, but "Big Macs are not a SLIMMING AID" sounds more than a little fat phobic, to me. There are certainly ways to denounce pornograhy without also denouncing fat people. I'm uncomfortable with the implication about food, "health food" or not, being put on the same level of harm as something MUCH more harmful, like pornography. Indeed, I'd be more inclined to compare the harm of pornography to the harm of dieting -- both exploit women and encourage women to hate themselves.

    Well, quite, Edith.

Pornography denounces women the way MacDonalds denounces healthy eating.

No-one here is 'fat phobic' or denouncing fat people. Food/dieting/pornography - all used as weapons against women by the patriarchy.

Yes, sorry, I should've perhaps prefaced my comment with something encouraging like, "I really love your blog." Because I do. I was just surprised to see eating McDonald's equivocated with using porn, and the "slimming aid" phrase was like an added, whoa.

I just think, really, no matter how you word it, there's no comparison. McD's food is "food," at the very least. If the choice is between starving or eating McD's, by all means, eat McD's (this includes, I think, self-imposed starvation).

I can't think of any scenario where pornography ISN'T helpful, however. I think drawing an analogy between them has the unintended affect of making fast food seem worse than it is and, more dangerously, making pornography seem less dangerous than it is.
